Be proactive in defining and reviewing frequently the purpose of whatever you are doing. Make it conscious, not just intuitive. It's how you know you are optimizing your effort instead of massaging your ego.
From the simplest e-mail to the complex report, don't loose sight of the value you're adding with your investment of time. The moment you let your instinct run free, you might be falling into low-value-perfeccionism.
