PROCRASTINATION SERIES (3/5)
Don't take decisions too seriously.
Deciding is clearly overrated. If you have a powerful goal in mind, achieving it or not achieving it will rarely depend on any single decision. There will be a thousand ways to achieve that same goal. Don't stop at every crossroad, to decide perfectly: you're just delaying success. You are trying to achieve a goal, not to live a life absent of mistakes! Decide more, and self-correct quickly as needed.
In fact, statistics around the most successful people tell stories of many failures. I suppose failing is intrinsic to trying, and trying is intrinsic to succeeding. That is: if you don't try, you'll never succeed.
I believe every singe decision may have a dramatic "butterfly effect" on your life - a big impact in circumstances. I really do. I think that, like in some movies, catching a bus or missing it can lead to two very different lifes.
But that belief shouldn't be mixed with the belief that one of those lifes is full of pleasure, and the other full of pain. Deciding to buy house A or house B, marry or not a person, change or not jobs, decide to invest in this or that, may lead you to different life circumstances, being that your happiness is not dependent so much on those circumstances, as it is dependent on your thinking about those circumstances.
Once I had a client clearly suffering from a dilemma: she had this really nice job, with great challenge and team and she was faced with the opportunity of another really nice job, with great challenge and team, and she had spent weeks in the misery of not being sure about what to do. Look, I said, isn't your life very good as it is? Yes, indeed. Wouldn't your life be really good if you took the new job? Yes, indeed. Wow, what a dilemma!! Two possible paths, each granting a great life... how can you be so miserable about that?
Sometimes, when you don't know what to choose, just flip the coin! It doesn't matter that much.
